Close to the Duomo and the Teatro alla Scalla opera house, the shop is Paul Smith’s flagship in the city and is peppered throughout with a mix of vintage and modern furniture as well as a large-scale photograph taken by Paul Smith.

Set within the grandeur of the magnificent Palazzo Gallarati Scotti, an 18th-century palace originally commissioned by the Spinola family, the contemporary space was designed by architect Sophie Hicks. The Milanese Baroque exterior contrasts with the modern double-height interior with glass walkways and stairs – a clever use of the space which once functioned as galleries surrounding a cloistered courtyard.

A tribute to the building’s rich heritage, the original terrazzo floors inside have been sensitively restored with pink mosaic, while the walls are plastered in traditional Italian plaster in a vibrant modern pink. “We wanted a vulgar pink,” Paul once jokingly said. “It’s as shocking a pink as the plaster will take.”
